BaselWorld 2013 : Akrivia

The minds behind the new brand Akrivia are the young watchmakers Rexhep Rexhepi and Etienne Deschamps.  I had the pleasure of meeting them and seeing their first production, the Saturn tourbillon chronograph at BaselWorld.  Both Rexhep and Etienne come from the small world of exclusive watchmaking in Geneva.  Rexhep apprenticed and worked at Patek, Etienne at Chopard.  But for both Rexhep and Etienne the world of those relatively big companies was too full of compromises.  They decided to start out on their own and Akrivia was born.

Akrivias first watch is the Saturn, a race combination, a tourbillon chronograph.  The watch is beautifully decorated with all the details of the best of Geneva watchmaking.  The movement is a cooperation between Acrivia and the Manufacture Haute Complication SA in Geneva with the decoration all done by hand by Rexhep and Etienne.

Note that this is a horizontal clutch chrono driven directly by the tourbillon cage.  The clutch and clutch lever can be see through the open dial at about 4 o'clock.

I wish Rexhep and Etienne all the best for their new adventure with Akrivia.  The watchmaking talent is present.  And as you can see the watch looks good on the wrist.

made for Hublot, RJ, F. Villa for instance. Not very original to recycle an "old" movement like that... Not sure either if this is enough to successfully launch a new brand.

A good startup in my view

Hi Goldenlutin, Correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I can tell nearly every young brand/maker - including some now very well known and/or famous ones i know - started exactly like this. So what? It ain't easy to gather the several millions needed for ...

I see things a bit differently...

Hello Theodore, Well, IMHO the now most successeful watchmakers/small brands started with something personal/unique: FP Journe, Urwerk, MB&F, Laurent Ferrier, Richard Mille, Gerber, Daniels, Smith, Dufour. Well some if not all might have used some exi...

Hi Goldenlutin

No problem, I understand what you are saying of course, but it is interesting to see how we all view things from different angles/perspectives. You brought up some interesting examples indeed; just for fun may I give my 'angle' on your list for a moment? ...

well...

Hi Theodore, Well, I actually had not Voutilainen on my list :), because he always uses old ébauches (Peseux 260, VJ, etc.) Regarding Daniels I was more thinking at his wonderfull pocket watches (like the Space Traveller), which are definitively not based...

Thank you Don! More infos about the Saturn

Hi everyone, My name is Etienne Deschamps and I am the co-founder of AkriviA. First of all, I would like to say thank you to Don Corson for his article! It was a real pleasure to meet Don and present him the prototype of our first watch as well as talking...

From a design standpoint, I'm really fond of the case. The attention paid to the case finishing really elevates the design in my opinion. Photos can be deceptive, but the legibility of the main hands would be my main concern. The main hands are very close...
