MB&F's newest Performance Art piece – the LM1 Xia Hang

Feb 27, 2014,12:28 PM

With only a month until BaselWorld 2014 MB&F announces its newest watch the Legacy Machine Nr.1 Xia Hang Performance Art piece.  Xia Hang, a young contemporary artist from Peking and one of the first artists showing at the MB&F M.A.D Gallery collaborated to make this watch, a combination of the 19th-century inspired MB&F Legacy Machine and the cool alien creatures of Xia Hang. The alien sitting on the dial raises and slumps to show the state of winding of the watch.

Enough words, here are the first pictures with wrist shot, on my wrist.

Great idea for a stunning watch. I am not too sure though whether I would choose the alien over the original LM1 but love the idea of incorporating art. Greubel Forsey did this to the extreme with the micro sculpture in the crown, Thanks for the wonderful...

From the pictures taken, I feel that it is harder to read the "power reserve" level when the lever is now an alien on this art version. Don't get me wrong. I really like the LMs. But the replacement of the lever bar with this alien construct has lost some...

Apart from a vague impression

I could not see what was there - and happening. Regards, amerix

... is rarely practical. While it's true it's much harder to gauge your power reserve from this statue, i'm of the opinion that the spirit of this collaboration tends towards the artistic, rather than the practical. Besides, the LM1 was already perfect, i...

luv the little alien theme

as personally I am not sure if I like the LM series watches or not. I always feel a disonance between the dial side and movement side designs. As much as I like the HM series, the LM series leaves with questions. Don

Do not get it ...

One may like it or not but what feels strange to me is to put an alien into a LEGACY machine. In a "normal" machine I would have understood it but not in something presented as an homage to old masters... Is it just me?

Not just you

I think this is a stretch, even in a "normal" machine, as you put it.

You need this one...

...and the Panda, of course! Best, Gary

Yup, I hear you

I don't know if the alien is appropriate in the legacy machine. The watch in itself before this new iteration was already perfect. Now it's just too much and doesn't serve any real purpose. I don't like this

I like it a lot!

It has the right amount of whimsy. And the little man reflects exactly how I feel when I am run down or at the end of the day - slumped over and waiting for more energy (or a wind up). More and more I view mechanical watches as works of art and this colla...
