Some quality time with the Habring2 Doppel 3.0

Family watchmaking - how can this be better exemplified with the small Austrian brand Habring2 ? Maria Kristina and Richard are well known amongst seasoned collectors, not only for their very hands-on approach and direct contact with their collectors, but also for their unique concept of (relatively) affordable yet distinctly devised timepieces.

A prime example certainly is the Doppel series of split-second chronographs. These are technically inspired from the IWC Doppelchronograph, itself a creation of Richard Habring (more about this here ). The Habrings revisited the old movement and improved it in respect to technical (split-seconds mechanism; serviceability) as well as aesthetic aspects (position of the subdials for minute counter and permanent seconds). They also made it available as a 'standard' rattrapante chronograph (Doppel 2.0 ) as well as 'mono pusher' split-second version (Doppel 3.0 ), the latter being the subject of this post.

The result is a mesmerising watch, technically entirely modern with a subtle vintage touch. I spent some quality time with the Doppel 3.0 in deep blue with a brushed case:

There is a lot going on on the dial, which sports large counters and prominent applied indices and numerals.

On a closer look it gets even better with light playing on the distinctly finished inner and outer sections of the face (see also wrist shots below):

Nice view on the two seconds counters pointing to the rattrapante mechanism of the movement. clearly visible also is the domed sapphire crystal, which certainly adds to the vintage appearance of the watch:

Maria Kristina and Richard invested a lot of thought and time into the design of the watch. All indications are perfectly visible, and time and chronograph functions have distinct formal features which not only comprise the hands but also the dial design (note the permanent seconds (left) and the minute counter (right)):

The shot above also nicely demonstrates how fine respective finishes of outer and inner dial sections are, and how subtle the differences appear. Yet, given suitable light, the effects are tremendous. This I call a great design!

Amazing how much detail even is found in the numerals (and also the finely rounded and polished hands!)!

On the flip side one can admire the calibre A08MR-MONO, clearly based upon the Valjoux 7750 family of mainstay chronograph movements.

While still clearly similar to IWC's original version, much of the split seconds mechanism has been reworked, with more parts visible and some small but significant changes particularly at the split seconds spring (and their control) section.

Although a cam/lever design, this is a feat of mechanical engineering. Precision and feedback provided by the chronograph mechanism is well implemented.

I always doubted the cross-the-board statement that column wheel chronographs are by definition superior, and this is a nice example for this. Its not haute horlogerie either, but a distinct expression of Habring's own watchmaking philosophy, and this is why we appreciate individual and independent makers, isn't it?

But where the watch really shines is where is belongs: on the wrist of the owner!

Especially here: life and changes with the light!

Its thickness pairs well with the robust nature and rather tool-like charm of the piece!

I personally think this piece is irresistible at its price point, offering a cherished complication in a unique implementation by one of the most likeable and respected family watchmakers!

Thanks for reading - pretty soon I can share with you much more interesting news on Habring2 ;-)

Cheers,
Magnus

I had the chance to be in contact with them (Maria specially) and despite not having (yet) pulled the trigger on one of their pieces I keep a very pleasant memory of their customer service, gentle, easy and available. I can only be glad of their success.

This watch is a great reason to visit Austria.
