Capturing lightning in a bottle

Oct 13, 2009,01:17 AM

Well, perhaps we can't catch lightning in a bottle, but how about on a watch dial?  Many, if not all, of you have heard the phrase foudroyante used, and probably already know that the term is derived from the word foudre, which can be translated to "lightning" in French.  A foudroyante, also known as a "flying" seconds, is a display on a watch in which the hand makes 1 complete rotation each second.  A foudroyante hand can pause 4,5,6, or 8 times (as examples), within the span of 1 second.  The resulting display is one of lightning-quick motion on the watch dial.  It's quite mesmerizing IMO.

By way of illustrating this fascinating complication, and with the kind permission of Richard and Maria Habring of Habring2, I've attached below a brief video the Habrings provided of a foudroyante module which they will begin offering.  In the video below, you'll see the foudroyante in the subdial at 9 o'clock paired with what's becoming a signature of Habring2, their lovely jumping second hand in the time display.  The foudroyante in combination with the jumping central seconds hand makes for a fascinating, dynamic, and quite simply joyous expression of the passage of time IMO.  I'm not 100% positive, but I believe we here on PuristSPro are either the first, or amongst the first folks to see this particular video of the upcoming offering from Habring2.

Thank you to Maria and Richard Habring for allowing me to share the video with all of you.  I think we are going to see some exciting new offerings from Habring2 in the near future, and that's a good thing in my book.  Enjoy the brief video.

Cheers,
Daos

Contrasts …

 By: AndrewD : October 13th, 2009-02:07
Thanks Daos, This combination is new to me. I enjoy these sorts of visual contrasts. While a dead second contrasting with a tourbillon, ala FPJ, would be preferable ( J ), the foudroyante and dead second hands on this Habring are very nice. Has anyone els...

Good question

I've never seen the combination before myself. Obviously, there are several foudroyante chronos that have come out in recent years (Graham, GP, Hublot, Panerai), but the juxtaposition of foudroyante with jumping central seconds (this Habring 2 is non-chro...

Woah Daos!

Very cool video, Daos.

Would be cooler still in a chrono. I'm wondering whether this complication might become distracting as an "always on" feature? Thanks for sharing the video and the news from Maria and Richard. Best, Jed

Thanks for the feedback!

I can see your point of view about the foudroyante. I personally think all that movement on the dial is fun, uncommon, and exciting, but for some people it could be distracting, as you say. Cheers, Daos

Fun, uncommong and exciting for sure!

No argument from me there. The foudroyante is waaay cool in my book. Best, Jed

Very interesting combination, indeed.

I would love to see the finished watch in the near future. Thanks for posting the video Daos!

No worries, Allen!

Glad you got a chance to watch the video. I'm excited to see what the Habrings have up their sleeves! This particular pairing of flying and jumping seconds is fun to watch, I think. What will we call this watch? The flying jump seconds? The flying dead se...

Are you asking about how the movement is set-up? It's cool, right? Cheers, Daos

Outstanding post, Daos!

I'm envious -- must have been great fun to see this puppy! Just the sort of complication that appeals to a nutty guy like myself... Hope you are well, and that with the passage of the rains you are getting some sleep! Best, Gary G

I'm really tempted by this configuration. Richard and Maria actually shot this video themselves and emailed it to me. Let's just say I'm highly intrigued. I hope you are doing well. When are you gonna get down to LA and visit with us local folk? Sending m...

I am currently talking to Maria and Richard about a Chezard 116 based watch but this one is STUNNING too !!!!!!!!! Thanks, Edwin

It's cool, right?

 By: dxboon : October 20th, 2009-22:06
Hi Edwin! How exciting that you are talking with the Habrings about a new potential project! I really liked working with them. I hope to see a Habring 2 on your wrist one day soon! *fingers crossed* Hope all is well! Cheers, Daos

VERY cool indeed ...

Hi Daos, I have been looking for a nice C.116 base watch since eternity, but the ones I found were either to small (sub 35mm diameter) or way to expensive considering their condition. Your post, ahci.watchprosite.com , made me realize I still could get on...

I can't wait to see your new Habring, Edwin!

I wonder who will get their Habring 2 with Chezard movement first, you or Stephen (Blunotte)? I love my jumping seconds, and know you will love yours also. I'm so excited for you! Cheers, Daos
