New candidate!...

Mar 23, 2011,07:07 AM

Some exciting news: there is a new AHCI candidate.

Especially exciting: she (Eva Leube) hails from that well-known centre of the horological universe, Sydney Australia!

For those in Basel presently: she is, apparently, attending the show. Anything you could report back will be most gratefully received.

Heartfelt congratulations, Ms Leube!

Cheers,
pplater.

That shift of the goalposts should work. What tribe are you from and when were you initiated? Hmmmm. Maybe 'first non-female Independent in Australia'??? Any way you look at it, it's terrific to have both of you in the Great Southern Land. Cheers, pplater...

we're all keeping an eye on you Tom :)

It's a big continent and there's plenty of room ...

Too true!, it's being the first Victorian independent that actually counts! (apologies to international readers that have no idea what I'm talking about..) Tom Ashton Watchmaker

You share the ambition to make hand built watches in your part of the world, you should NOT be competitors but become allies, which would benefit all and detract nothing! Best Christian

Very true, But it's the Australian way to be a bit competitive :-) I look forward to meeting Eva, I wish I'd net her earlier actually, as having someone local who has an understanding from a practical side of what I'm trying to achieve would have been imm...

watchmaker. Ms Leube is born in Germany and trained there, in Switzerland (with Thomas Prescher) and elsewhere. That still would make you the first Australian watchmaker according to your fine (and well appreciated) differentiation! Best, Magnus

Does she have a particular design aesthetic?

 By: RJW : March 23rd, 2011-15:28
No significant clues on her website. Worked at Rolex, Ulysse Nardin and with Thomas Prescher. Regards, Richard.

Gruen?

Great news for Australia in particular. I'm not there, as you know, but I'll keep you posted on any info I have. I was last in contact with her at the beginning of February.

Interesting news indeed!!

We are a very long way away from the action down here, so it's good to hear of an Australian, even an adopted one, making their way in the world of independent watchmaking. And Tom, only a very minor shift of goal posts is required here. First Australian ...

Sounds good to me!

Though there is also David Walters.. expat.. now living in the US i believe.. I'll still be happy to make a watch, and hopefully one that looks good too, regardless of what number I am, the surge in independent awareness in the past few years in this area...

Still in there Tom...

From memory, David had been born in the States, lived in Australia for a while (indeed, in Perth!) and then returned Stateside. Also from memory, he has not brought a watch to market, though that could change. ;-). His clocks, however, are extraordinary -...

Thanks for the heads-up! As a (transplanted) Aussie watchmaker working in Geneva, I reckon it'd be great to more Australian watchmakers, even 'adopted' ones. I will be looking up Eva tomorrow at BaselWorld. See you over here sometime too, Tom ? Cheers, Ro...

First Australian Independant

Hi pplatter, I pretty much have the claim to being the first Independent Horologist in Australia, please remember the name of this forum is AHCI not "watchmakers only". Over the years I have been amazed at the lack of interest in haute horologie in Austra...

There's little enough information around on who is from where, that it's great to hear from source! The pocket watch sounds like it should be quite an awesome project, and given the quality of your clocks should be a masterpiece to behold Though my person...

Thanks Tim!...

Very good of you to take time to seek out Eva and grab some shots. That is a comprehensive 'first' effort. Not only is it aesthetically cohesive, it seems to be a technical tour de force as well. Looking forward to learning more. Cheers, pplater.

to hearing about and seeing more of this watch. Sound like there were some interesting technical challenges, and the design is very 'open' - from your photo is looks to be almost all about the movement. would be great to see any other shots you have. grum...

Maybe this time I will be able to meet you! I was in communication with Eva a few mons ago when I first got wind of her presence in Sydney, and she said that she'd get in contact with me for a visit upon her return.

Thanks everyone for the kind words...here are the other pics

I ought to have taken the watch to a better spot to snap pics, as the lighting was horrendous, and in retrospect my pics do NOT do justice to this piece. However, here we go... So there you go, not great images, but something to wet your appetites. You'll...
