Marital Harmony AFTER purchasing a new watch

Aug 06, 2009,21:30 PM

My wife sometimes thinks I am obsessed with watches. As I try on 8 straps and decide on this stingray one, it occurs to me that I might be able to help some other Purists with a similar situation. Does anyone else have this family situation???

I decide that denial of the problem is my first strategy.

"Heaven Forbid!" says I.

"Take that orange watch, for example. Stop fiddling with that watch and bothering the cat, and help me around the house. And put down that camera!"

"Yes, dear"  I cheerfully reply, knowing this is not the time to argue. Denial is not going to work.

I do a few chores in the garage, then head into the house.

"Could you start by doing the laundry"

"Ok, glad to help. Anytime."

"Get out of the wine cellar!"

(I didn't think she saw me go in there ... a little glass of champagne would be nice right now...)

"And vacuum the rugs please."

No problem, I say.

"Are you wearing your kayaking shirt in the house?"

Oops, she spotted me.

"Please make the salad."

"Clean your fingernails then pour two glasses of iced tea, okay?"

"Yes mother" I mumble.

"Do you have any ideas about what we should have for dinner?"

"Uhmm, Let me think" I reply.

"While I cook, you can trim the plants on the porch"

"Okay, Okay." I'm starting to get tired of this. Does she feel this way about my watchbuying? Nah, that would be unreasonable.

"And fix those cracks in the stained glass door while you are at it!"

"Yes dear." I mutter.

"How about getting those Citroens out of the driveway, so my Mother can park near the house."

"Grrr" I growl.   However, "Yes, dear" is what I cheerfully cry out.

"Honey! Time to wash up ..." she shouts.

"Where's my hand cleaner? I can never find anything in the bathroom. Sheesh."

"Want to watch a video after supper?"

"Well, now things are looking up. How about that - IT Crowd. I wonder how long this episode runs ... wish this was a chrono"

"yawn, snore ZZZZZ"

"Are you going to sleep on the couch all night?"

Is she getting a bit, well, dare I say it? No, better not.

"Huh? Where am I? What's going on? Why is it dark?"

"Come to bed sweetie pie, I love you"

I'm on my way!

And that's how it's done ... restoring marital harmony after getting a new watch.
