Kari Voutilainen's new inhouse caliber

Jan 12, 2011,08:50 AM

Last week I was visiting Kari Voutilainen and had the extreme privilege to see the prototypes of his inhouse movement which should be launched within the next 2 months.

He asked me not to say too much but what I can say is that is will be a killer! It will feature a new escapement never seen in a watch before!!!!!

But first lets have a look at the clothes: The case is typical Kari, with the tear drop lugs and a 39mm diameter. It will be available in rose gold, white gold and platinum.

Kari will start with two different dials: silver and slate grey with two different engine turned motifs each either with Arabic or Roman numerals. Kari now has an inhouse guillocheur who is especially gifted and can reproduce special patterns upon request.

Here are the first two dials which need to recieve color treatement and have the numerals applied

Kari had been thinking of this special escapement for many years but actually sat down to design it 3 years ago. The first tests were made on an Unitas movement where he replaced the escapement with his own and Kari says with great pride: "it worked perfectly first time round"!

The caliber has been in fact functionning for close to two years, it has been made reliable and Kari is currently working on assembly of the very first models.

The construction is extremely inovative and will have the typical extremely high level Kari Voutilainen finish.

The movement is manufactured entirely in Kari's workshops, he only buys the mainspring, the hairspring (to which he gives a Breguet overcoil) and the jewels!

the pillar holding the balance bridge:

the balance bridge before and after finish:

an extra large free sprung balannce:

the assebmled but unfinished movement and even in this state it looks phenomenal! Note that in the final watch the center wheel and the chatons will be in rose gold and the plates and bridges in German silver.

stay tuned.......

Voutilainen should be there. Perhaps he could make me one if I ask in a polite way in Finnish. We also join the same christian name. Anyhow, looks like it will be a stunning watch! Best, Kari

Very.....

interesting..... Thanks for sharing with us.... Cheers

The bezel size....

 By: CL : January 12th, 2011-09:54
Hi Alex...would you say the bezel is the same size as the Observatoire or wider? The thin bezel on the Observatoire makes the watch very big on my wrist even when it was only 38mm :-( One remedy for me, go for a very dark dial, might help This watch looks...

I feel the bezzel is slightly bigger so who knows you

interesting..

I'm eagerly waiting as well. Could you please explain what makes the escapement special? From the photos I only see a freesprung balance with the tourbillon bridge... Thanks!

Kari asked me not to talk about the escapement yet but

 By: alex : January 12th, 2011-11:27
you will see it soon enough ;-) BTW its a balance bridge not a tourbillon

alex,

 By: didwlgh : January 12th, 2011-13:33
I fully undertand that it is not a tourby since there is no cage. However, I was pointing out the the bridge for the balance itself is a type common to tourbillons. Hope I made that clear this time. ;-)

Wow this will be a killer...

Thanks for this post Alex. I was in Môtier just before Christmas and didn't stop in to see Kari. I see that was a big mistake! Don

Very nice

I like the stacking of components, the center wheel above the balance wheel above one of the wheel cocks. I just hope it doesn't fall into the pit where his chrono seems to be hiding A

I wonder if the new escapement

 By: mkt33 : January 12th, 2011-10:29
is similar to the chronometer escapement that Kari "officially" worked on with UJS. ? Hope to see it soon. Mike

Thanks Alex (nt)

Even the unfinished product looks amazing... WOW!

Looking closer...

 By: adrianmoles : January 12th, 2011-14:40
Looks similar to a double wheel scapement. We see on pic 1, there's two scapement wheels (2) with their own bridges (4 and 6). The anchor with his bridge (6) and on the second pic (1). Also we see how that if the crown is at 3 o clock then at 6 o clock it...

Looks very very promising.

Looks very exciting, even in this unfinished state. I'm very curious to see what escapement is being used. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, how can I keep up with them...

 By: KIH : January 12th, 2011-22:51
.... in terms of the bank account :-( But I agree that this is very exciting news, especially those who, including me, missed the bus for Observatoire! I can't wait to see it in person in Vegas! Best, Ken

Sorry, forgot to say....

Alex -- Great report, as always -- I am now looking forward to next week's visit with Kari with even more anticipation than before! Love that balance bridge -- my guess is that in the production version the degree of finish will be even higher. And I can'...

Except being a Voutilainen, there is a tiny little detail...

 By: Ornatus-Mundi : January 13th, 2011-05:39
that makes me think this is a landmark piece: Its clear the watch has two escape wheels. But the one on the right seems not to have a connection with the gear train? Fascinating! I hope I spotted it correctly..., Magnus

Thanks, Alex

Looking forward to more on this one. Initial look is incredible. Douglas
