...in this case for our pre-SIHH planning lunch! One of our stalwarts was absent due to a flu bug and was sorely missed, but we did manage to get through our detailed spreadsheet of planned activities for the upcoming Geneva trip and share some watches as well.
With the standard disclaimers about restaurant lighting, point and shoot camera, pleasant distractions of conversation, etc., here are some shots from a very pleasant few hours.
Let's start with a new acquisition, and a very unusual piece -- the Roger Smith Series 2 in Stainless Steel. Beautiful with the blued hands and Romans, and very comfortable on the wrist as well:
Another new acquisition by a member of the group -- the recent "larger" version of this classic Breguet QP. I hadn't seen this version before, and almost bought the original version several years ago so this one was a real treat for me. I guess there are actually two recent acquisitions in this photo, with my new Reverso TTR 1931 visible in the background...
And, a shot of the reverse of the Breguet -- lots of lovely engraving. In my view they are getting better and better with the passage of time.
Not a new acquisition, but freshly back from a full service in Germany, the WG Dato Perpetual with that extremely tasty dark grey dial. This is a real favorite of mine -- resources permitting, one of these will join my stable sometime in the future:
The Dato Perp in the background, with my DS in the foreground. There was actually a second DS in attendance, another new acquisition by the owner of the Dato Perp and Breguet -- but somehow I failed to get a shot of it, or a "team" shot of the two Double Splits! Dang -- will have to wait for another time.
Two great pieces -- both with tremendous wrist presence -- and as I've said before, the DS is surprisingly wearable.
Moving right along -- don't see too many of these FPH CS's in the Black Label boutique edition -- this one looking great at 38mm
...and the movement side view is sheer poetry:
Both of the group members' VH Antiquas were in attendance -- great fun searching for the small differences between these two, made a few years apart and both with lots of visible hand made touches
Big wrist, big watch! The photo doesn't do this one justice, but I really enjoyed having the chance to handle this Panerai -- which as expected set off lots of discussion about straps
A group table shot of most of the Independent pieces at the lunch -- some additional shots below:
One from Ludovic (the Subscription Upside Down #7, as indicated by the red numeral at that position) and two Simplicities -- PT with lacquer dial and WG with grey guilloche. There's not an incarnation of the Simplicity that I dislike -- the Grey dial with silver hands is a bit difficult to read in bright light, but you can see here that in more subdued light it is really striking:
Just the two Simplicities, side by side...with the blue hands on the PT watch very much in evidence
Not to leave Kari out, a couple of Observatoires! You can clearly see in this photo the difference in appearance between the silver numerals on the left and the anthracite numerals on the right. Also some other distinctions -- soleil guilloche in the center of the right-hand watch vs. barleycorn on the left, triangular indices at 12 and 6 vs. round dots, etc. Some of the custom features that make this watch so distinctive, in my view
Back to my pal's Antiqua -- look how the central section of the main time dial seems to sparkle!
Last but not least, the reverse of the Gerber -- I spent several minutes just turning this watch and watching the winding weights flip -- what fun...
That's it, at least for now! My guess is that I'll have a few shots to share during and following SIHH week -- stay tuned.
Hope you enjoyed...
