Lunch with Kari

Oct 03, 2012,18:47 PM

Greetings!  For this post, I have dispensed with my usual "So seven guys go into a restaurant..." title, even though that is exactly what happened here.  This meeting really was all about the people, even though some watches were on display (photos below) -- the NorCal gang meeting with our good friend Kari Voutilainen.

Lunch was at the Parallel 37 restaurant at the Ritz Carlton hotel in San Francisco, later in the day the site of one of the big watch events of the year, Jeff Kingston's review of the Basel and Geneva shows (and more broadly this year, some fascinating films ranging from a visit to a watchmaking school to an inspiring day with Philippe Dufour).

Lots of fun conversation over a period of a couple of hours -- as always, the time went by way too fast.  I missed out on photographing a number of the watches present (all of the Observatoires, the Duality, a Simplicity, etc.) but was fortunate to catch a couple of Kari's current pieces.  First, the 37mm Vingt-8, now with a small seconds hand:

...and a lovely larger Vingt-8 in rose gold:

Here's the movement side of the latter watch -- for me, Kari's finishing keeps getting better over the years, and despite restaurant lighting conditions and the use of a point/shoot camera, some of that comes out here:

Next, a beautiful Masterpiece Chronograph: this one a unique piece with 45-minute register

Kari's in-house movement as seen from the rear -- a real feast for the senses

Among the other watches present, a few notable tourbillons.  First, one of my favorites, the FPJ Subscription piece:

...and not one, but two ALS PLM Tourbillons!  The third one owned by the group is still off at Lange for routine service -- I am salivating at the idea of getting all three of those watches in one place for a photo session...

Finally, a revelation from the master:

An upcoming piece, seen here for the first time!  As many of you know, my wrist shot technique isn't very good, and I'm sorry that I seem to have blurred this one a bit -- guess we will all just have to wait for delivery of this watch to get a clearer view smile

That's it for now!  Hope you enjoyed -- more news anytime I have it...

All the best,

Gary G

Now where can I get the anti blurring program... cheers PAt

I am hopeful

...that no such program exists! I did re-save the image so it's certainly not as simple as going into Photoshop and hitting "undo" a few times :-). Patiently waiting for the master to finish his work... Best, Gary

What eye candy!

All of the pieces you photographed are spectacular, but I find the Masterpiece Chronograph to be most haunting of them all... ...although, I might just be tempted to choose the mystery watch. Don't leave us in suspense for too long! Thanks for the great w...

Thanks for chiming in, lw!

Great to have new folks participate in these threads -- welcome. I do wonder how many folks would choose the mystery watch, sight unseen, given their choice of any of the pieces in the post! I do agree with you that the Masterpiece Chrono is a lovely piec...

Me too!

That is, to seeing my example -- the one on view was a not quite completed version but still gave an excellent sense of what the finished piece will be like. Tough waiting out the final days! Best, Gary

Great report Gary

That Masterpiece Chronograph is a tour de force. Rare to see an in-house chrono by an independent (Patek did not even have one until a couple years ago), and this could be the best in that elite category. When you sees all the watches (his own "brand" and...

Glad you liked the FPJ shot -- it actually looks better on my monitor (that is, before uploading compression). That's not an easy watch to capture -- I still have not really grabbed the look of the gold dial to my liking at any of our various lunches, and...

You must nearly have forgotten to lunch!

with such wonderful watches ... I'm more and more attraacted by Voutilainen especially the vingt 8 and the Obesrvatoire. You metionned that the Vingt 8 is now available with a small second, but wasn't it already possible? (the Vingt-2 is a 2 hands only wa...

This mono pusher chrono was in the room

on the wrist of a lucky collector attending the Inside Basel/Geneva event. Let's just say it got quite a bit of attention. As I understand 6 pieces were made. Rather large watch, but stunning. Between various Observatoires in the room, this mono-pusher ch...

43mm and a WG case if I am not wrong. Regarding the LE I have different numbers 4, 5 and now you mentioned 6!? Would love to see one in the metal :-) Oliver

My recollection is that Kari said that he made 6

of these monopusher chronos. There was quite a stir when a few friends wandered to Kari's table and he mentioned that another attendee had one of these monopushers on his wrist. Shortly we succeeded in finding the watch and its lucky owner. I have to say ...

What a gathering

and it seems that Gary shares your opinion about the Monopusher's width. Thanks for the infos Tahoeblue ;) Cheers, Mark

Sorry for any confusion, Mark

What I meant was that the prior 37mm version of the Vingt-8 was made as a two hand watch (the "ladies" version with MOP dial presented at Basel earlier this year). I believe that this new one with guilloche dial is the first of the 37mm versions to have t...

Nice watches! How long before Mr. Blurrycam goes away...

and we can see a clear picture of the watch?

Mr. Blurrycam could theoretically go away within a few weeks

What can I say? I'd love to post all sorts of photos of intermediate production steps, Photoshop mockups, movement schematics, etc. but have taken a solemn pledge not to do so until the watch has been released. Should not be too long, though! Best, Gary

Nice Report Gary!

Love the photos! That chronograph with the 45 minute register is very nice!

You were doing well, but disappoint at the final hurdle, soldier!! :)-

I am intrigued by what he has up his sleeve. And I do hope he focus his time and effort back at his own watches, then do collaborations with others further. Did you say, you ordered the new KV? Congrats if so, in advance Thanks for the coverage Best, Horo...

One in the oven for sure...

Horo -- I do indeed have this watch on order, as do a few friends :-). It has been a long wait -- I have to agree with you that I would be happier if Kari devoted his attention to his own pieces (including mine :-)) first, and his collaborations second! W...
