Thomas Prescher - Nemo Captain, 3-axis tourbillon

Thomas Prescher - Nemo Captain

The second of Thomas Prescher's Nemo series of watches is the Nemo Captain.  We saw the press release last weekend and I got a call from Thomas yesterday "come quick to take pictures before the owner comes and takes it away!"

So I did.

The Nemo series is inspired by Jules Verne's story 20'000 Leagues under the sea and thusly a maritime look of portholes and nameplates.  The first model the "Sailer" is in stainless steel and bronze.  This second model the "Captain" with its 3-axis tourbillon is cased in palladium and red gold.

To go with the more closed industrial maritime look, the dial has been reduced to a small window for the jumping hour, the minutes shown by the supporting leg of the 3-axis tourbillon.  The high spherical dome with its red gold frame over the tourbillon accentuates the tourbillon and its activity and makes a nice contrast to the cool and calm palladium surface of the rest of the dial.  So we have a sterling example of today’s popular "steam punk" style.

The crown in red gold is again in the form of a valve wheel as in the Nemo Sailer.

The finishing is to the same high standard as we have always known from Thomas with the hand engraved nameplates and the plate seen from the back.

This case and design really emphasises the tourbillon and its movement which makes the whole a real kinetic sculpture.  I think that this is one of Thomas' most successful designs yet.

(note that contrary to my usual practice I did "photoshop" some of these pictures, but only to remove the owners custom text on two of the nameplates from public view.)

I thought you would also be interest in what Thomas himself is wearing, a Nemo Sailer.  Note how wonderfully the bronze case is gaining its patina.  The edges where there is some wear remain bright and the other surfaces taking on a warm bronze color.

The minutes are shown by the position of the leg holding the tourbillon. There is also a triangular pointer which you can see best in this picture: This is actually quite easy to see in reality, but seems difficult in the pictures because of the lack of d...

Thomas Prescher has an unique style and knows how to create a specific atmosphere. I love both watches, the complex and the "simple". The way the Tourbillon is emphasized is superb. Thanks Don. Fx

I always admire Thomas as a innovative watchmaker.....

But there is always something lacking from my humble perspective....the lack of a certain attractiveness or "ohm" factor. Having met Thomas in person, I must say he is certainly a quite a character, and comes across as a man with strong convictions of his...

I am sure that the original plans (see his website) found in the Nautilus made some provision for that, especially with a crown designed after a valve Imagine swimming with a triple-axis tourbillon, or snorkling around a reef to attract the curiosity of e...

a watchmaker has almost captured the theme of Nemo completely. The ball glass and the first 1960s submarine in the movie... The Sailor is "affordable"? ...
