For me, the icons of the moon phases can be immediately grasped by anyone who from the stoneage, to the Mayas, to a visiter from an other universe - if knowing that it is the moon - our moon - that is represented here.
This is the Earth's moon, and where we can find ourselves during a solar day within the moon's own 29 1/2 day lunar course. No more, no less - but never more effectively displayed than by Vianney's instant while deeply intuitive visability as show in his VHJH. The Classic Janvier is far more sophistiated, to say the least, but continues to follow the same principle.
As we follow the sun, the moon, and our earthly needs ...
With that said, I am a great fan of Sarpaneva's moons!
There are too many "classic" moons around cushioned between grande tetons (vaguely anatomical) to make them attractive to me, smiling or blank-faced - some even gone steroid in size. As for the sphericals?
But I am always open for the exception, one coming soon to me - from Vianney himself - the neglected but not forgotten Contemporaine.
