HWM Firmamentum, the word is out, and here are the answers...
Mar 01, 2012,09:31 AM
The new watch from Heritage Watch Manufactory is called the Firmamentum (no that was not one of the questions).
As the firmament turns the stars and the sun in the sky appear to turn around us. This is the basis for all navigation and Harrison was the first to provide not only the theory of how to determine ones position on the globe, but also working clocks that were accurate enough to allow this positioning to be useful. Today in the age of GPS this seems so simple, we can hardly appreciate how much this invetion changed the world and increased the power of the English Empire at the time.
Below you will find the correct answers for the 11 hands on the sketch and some more pictures of the assembly of the watch.
a- Arc minute display, 1 turn=1°=60', turns once in 4 minutes
b- Arc hour display, 1 turn=15°, turns once an hour
c- Arc second display, 1 turn=1', turns once in 4 seconds
d- 24hour display, 1 turn=360°, turns once in 24 hours
e- Normal seconds hand, one turn a minute
f- Hours hand, depending on mode, mean solar time or sidereal time
g- Minutes hand, depending on mode, mean solar time or sidereal time
h- Arc hour display, 1 turn in 3 hours=45°, mean solar or sidereal time
i- Arc minute display, 1 turn=1', mean solar or sidereal time
j- 24hour display, mean solar or sidereal time
k- right ascension, read counter clockwise
Now give me some time to determine the winner.
Some pictures of the watch taken today. Yes, yes it will be ready for the Basel fair next week. Watchmakers are
accustomed to working 24 hours a day for the 2 weeks before the fair.
Karsten has his work set out for himself.
Placing the big dial side bridge
In a prototype case.
The upper push button stops the balance to allow precise synchonisation.
The lower button changes the mode.
Note the red band on the shaft of the button. This is a warning. Pressing this button when the red is visible will stop the watch to allow precise synchronisation. But if you forget to screw the protection back up you can also stop the balance by mistake.
Looking forward to taking pictures of the finished watch next week.
